Not much happened in the last week, but moving up a little bit.  I did take a shot and played the PocketFives Open on Saturday and of course ran like crap and went out early.

Finally!

Finally took down my first scheduled, multi-table, no-limit, online tournament with a buyin over $10.   It was the MSOP Event #4 (Mixed Limit) with a buy-in of $50+$5.  I sattied into it for $24+$2.  For those of you that don’t know, the MSOP is the Mini Series of Poker on Full Tilt.  They coincide their tournament with the event that is going on in Vegas for that day, with a buy-in of 1/100th of the WSOP event.  There were 687 players and the tournament killed the guarantee of 10k, with first place being a cool $8416.  The tournament was structured very well with 12 minute levels and going back and forth between limit and NL.  I won most of my chips during the limit rounds as most of the players were NL players who had no clue how to play limit.  In fact, towards the end of the tournament, players were using their time bank to delay the game in order to get back to the NL round from a limit round.  Another cool thing is that Full Tilt is giving the winners of each event a “FTP collectors watch”, which is their answer to the WSOP bracelets.

Things finally came around in the $3 TSNGs.  I had a good night, but a few attrocious beats hung around.  For instance….

The $2 180-TSNGs were also pretty good to me last night, but I wasn’t able to avoid the massive variance at the final tables.  I’m back up over $200 (for the 100th time it seems), and hopefully won’t drop back down again.  Back to mixing in the $6 TSNGs again, but not stepping up in cash games until I reach the $300 mark.

Update

I haven’t updated this in a while because not much has been going on.  Same old stuff.  Worked the bankroll back up and hit the $0.5/$1 SHL and Razz tables again, only to be slapped in the face.  I really can’t imagine that the level of play at this level is so much better than the $0.25/$0.5 level that I am being outplayed for multiple buy-ins.  I’ll wait even longer this time to jump up again, and hopefully the cards will fall my way.  I’m also running horrible at the $3 TSNGs, luckily the $6 TSNGs are keeping me afloat.  I also tried one of the new $2 180-man turbo SNGs which are pretty fun.

Chugging right along

Didn’t play at all last weekend, but the week has started of pretty well.  Doing well in the $6 TSNGs has helped as I’m not running very well recently in the $3 TSNGs.  Played in the PXF monthly subscribers tournament last night, got up to 6k in chips at the 300/600 level and my 10s ran into Kings.  I may start mixing in some $0.5/$1 SHL and razz again, but if things take a quick downturn, I’ll drop back down.

Recent Summary:

Fun day with AA

Well I had a good day yesterday and got my account back up to around $200.  So today’s lunch session I played two $3 TSNGs and two $6 TSNGs.  Things were going well and I pick up my first AA of the session:

PokerStars Game #17446875910: Tournament #88446745, $3.00+$0.40 Hold’em No Limit - Level V (75/150) - 2008/05/15 - 12:24:43 (ET)
Table ‘88446745 1′ 10-max Seat #3 is the button
Seat 3: lecki2 (4750 in chips)
Seat 4: risbold (8350 in chips)
Seat 9: darkknyt (1900 in chips)

risbold collected 5700 from pot
*** SUMMARY ***

Seat 4: risbold (small blind) showed [9s Kc] and won (5700) with a straight, Nine to King
Seat 9: darkknyt (big blind) showed [Ah Ad] and lost with a pair of Aces

Ok, I can handle Aces getting cracked every once in a while.  He’s down to 3 outs after the flop or runner runner, so it’s a little better than losing to an underpair.  Luckily I was already in the money at this point.

Which brings us to AA number 2:

PokerStars Game #17446994139: Tournament #88446770, $3.00+$0.40 Hold’em No Limit - Level VII (100/200) - 2008/05/15 - 12:31:31 (ET)

This one was rather frustrating as once again I have the chance to triple up.  It also hurts a little more being on the money bubble and having the chance to get a nice stack heading into the bubble.  So AA is 0 for 2 so far for the day.

Hands 3 and 4 finally hold and I take down a $6 TSNG.  I thought it was very interesting to have Aces 4 times in the span of 30 minutes and they held up only 2 of 4 times.  Small sample, but interesting none the less.

The Swings…..Oh, The Swings

Well, it’s been quite the roller coaster recently.  Worked my way up to about $230, quickly back down to under $100 and now I’m back up to about $170.  A true example of how quickly positive and negative variance can take a toll.  I plan on waiting a little longer to make the step up in cash games, but I plan on re-incorporating the $6 TSNGs once I get back to $200.

Run bad much?

I should have seen this coming.  Work my roll up to over $200, get excited about jumping up a level, and get smacked in the face.  Things actually started out pretty well as I won a $6 TSNG and worked my bankroll up to about $225, but that’s when everything went to ****.

Started playing the $0.50/$1 SHL and Razz tables and quickly lost a buyin in each.  Then the TSNGs started showing some negative variance.  Before I knew it, I was back at $150 again.  I dropped back down to playing the $3 TSNGs and $0.25/$0.50 SHL.  Things continued to go south and now I’m down around $100 again.

Quite a punch to the gut to build things up slowly to over $200 and then have it quickly spiral back to $100.  But this is what this challenge is all about.  Learning the importance of bankroll management, especially how variance can slap you in the face even if you think you’re able to beat a level.  I will now take more care when it comes to limit games, and not move up in level until I have about 250 or 300 big bets.

20% Complete!

I’m really starting to get excited about this as I hit the $200 mark.  Any time I can move up in limits gets me excited to move along with the challenge.  I am going to start to mix in $6 TSNGs again with the $3 such that my average buyin is $4.95.  With $208 in my bankroll, that is 42 buyins, which is close to the 45 that Fox recommends for a protected bankroll.  Variance slapped me around the last time I played the $6s, so hopefully I can start off with some positive variance.  I’m also going to try my luck at the $0.5/$1 SHL tables.  With a little over 200 big bets, I feel comfortable giving it a shot.  If my bankroll drops below $175, I plan on dropping back down for both games.

Yesterday’s results:

+$8.95 0.25/0.50 SHL

+$8.20 $3 TSNG:  1st:  1, DNP:  1

Overall Summary:

Starting BR: $1.51
Current BR: $208.00

PXF Monthly Tourney and getting close to 20%

I’m a member of the training site PokerXFactor.com and last night was their monthly subscriber tournament on Stars.  I had high hopes going into this event, but was card dead and ended up running AQ into KK.  It is a $5 tournament, which is currently outside my bankroll, but I figured once a month isn’t a big deal.  It’s good to take a shot every once in a while.

The Turbo SNG tables have been pretty good to me, and I’ve been getting a lot of 1sts and 3rds.  That basically means that once I’m in the money I’m playing to win.  I’d also like to think that it means that once I get to heads-up, I’m vastly better than my opponent.

The SHL tables have been a roller coaster recently too.  Case in point was yesterday.  I was playing one table and had run it up to $22 from $10 and things were looking good.  My hands were holding up against the donkey chasers.  Next thing I know, I’m down to about $3 as people are chasing and hitting miracle hands left and right.  My trips wouldn’t fill up while someone else would flush on the river or fill up from their two pair.  I know I can beat the game, as my results have shown, so I’m not going to get discouraged.

Last weekend

Well, the weekend started out horribly on Thursday night when I played 6 turbo SNGs and did not place in 1 of them.  The funny thing is that I had doubled up early in about 4 of them, but couldn’t hold on.  Usually for me, if I double up early on in a SNG, that means that I’ll make the money.  I also dropped about $20 at the SHL tables, and wasn’t looking good heading into Saturday.

Saturday was a different story.  I played 6 TSNGs and placed in 5 of them, with 3 firsts.  I also won back about $10 at the SHL tables for a fine recovery.

Weekend results:

-$9.35 0.25/0.50 SHL

+$19.20 $3 TSNG:  1st:  3, 2nd:  1, 3rd:  1, DNP:  7

Overall summary:

Starting BR: $1.51
Current BR: $184.90
